Year in, year out, lists of Senior High Schools that have performed creditably in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) emerge.
YEN has sampled a list of Senior High School’s (SHS’s) that have the most brilliant students.
1. Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC)
Admission into PRESEC is said to be a tough process. PRESEC has won the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) on 5 occasions (1995, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009). The school also boasts excellent WASSCE results.
It has produced several achievers in the country. It is the obvious choice for number one.
2. Prempeh College
The second top performer in the NSMQ. It has won the NSMQ on 4 occasions (1994, 1996, 2015, 2017). It is the undisputed top school in Kumasi. Its WASSCE results have always been excellent. This is the school that gave us former President J.A Kufuor.
3. Achimota Senior High School
Achimota has won the NSMQ on two occasions (1998 & 2004). It is considered one of Ghana’s elite schools. Leaders such as Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the late John Evans Atta-Mills, a former president, and Flt. Lt. (Rtd) Jerry John Rawlings, another former president of Ghana, attended the school.
4. Wesley Girls Senior High School
This school has been a perennial underachiever in NSMQ, but it often boasts some of the best national results in WASSCE.
Wesley Girls is considered the top girls’ school in Ghana. It has produced several top achievers, including Sylvia Boye, former chief executive and first female registrar of West Africa Examinations Council; Florence Dolphyne, first female pro-vice chancellor of the University of Ghana; Melody Millicent Danquah, first Female pilot in Africa; Mary Grant, Ghana’s first female council of state member and also the first Wesley Girls High School alumni to be a medical doctor; and Georgina Theodora Wood, former police prosecution officer first female Chief Justice of Ghana
5. Mfantsipim Senior High School
Mfanstipim is one of the top schools in the Central region. It has lifted the NSMQ trophy on 2 occasions (1999 and 2014). It prides itself with the fact that famous personalities such as the former Secretary-General to the United Nations (UN), Kofi Annan and Dr. K.A Busia, Ghana’s prime minister in the 2nd Republic, studied there.
6. Holy Child Senior High School
This school is one of the first options female wannabe SHS students aim for. It is indisputably one of the top secondary schools in the country. Just like Wesley Girls, it is yet to claim an NSMQ trophy. But its students always perform excellently in WASSCE.
7. St. Francis Xavier Senior High School
This is arguably the top school in the northern part of Ghana. The shool’s sterling efforts in the course of the 2012 NSMQ, for instance, did not escape the attention of Ghanaians.
8. Opoku Ware Senior High School
It has been one of the top performers in the NSMQ, which they won in 1997 and 2002. The school has also been losing finalists in the competition on several occasions. It is one of the top schools in the Ashanti Region, and certainly deserves a place in this list.
9. Adisadel College Senior High School
Adisadel is the school of choice for many young basic school leaver in Ghana. The school has won the NSMQ once. It has produced many successful Ghanaians, including Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin-Fosu.
10. St. Peters Senior High School
This school has won the NSMQ on two occassions, in 2000 and 2005. It has been runners up in 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2006. It is one of the top boys’ school in Ghana. It has produced a lot of successful Ghanaians, including many of our medical doctors.
11. Aburi Girls Senior High School
Popularly called Abugiss, it is one of the most popular schools for ladies in Ghana. It is has never won the NSMQ but, boasts excellent WASSCE results annually. It is certainly one of the best schools in Ghana.
12. Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School
It is another popular choice for ladies who wish to attain SHS tuition in Ghana. They reached the quarter finals of the NSMQ last year.
