10 Kumawood Stars And The Secondary Schools They Attended

Ghana is the only country in the world that recognizes a person’s secondary school institution as his or her official alma mater.

Most educated Ghanaian celebrities are so proud of the alma mater that they always reveal during interviews what they did when they were students in school.

In Kumawood, the small movie industry in Kumasi – Ghana, it is an open secret that most of the top-notch characters are either illiterates or failed to attend high school.

However, some famous Kumawood personalities on our TV screens were able to educate themselves formally even to the university level.

In this article, I present 10 known faces in Kumawood who attended senior high school in Ghana.

1. Emelia Brobbey – Akyem Swedru High School

She is an award-winning actress, TV host and singer. She is well-known for playing roles in movies like ‘Asantewaa’, ‘Adofoasa’, ‘Kae’ and ‘Amakye and Dede’.

She is a trained teacher and a graduate of GIMPA.

2. Benedicta Gafah – Presbyterian Girls’ High School

She is an actress, model and host of TV3 popular show, ‘Music Music’. She attended Presbyterian Girls’ in Kumasi and later furthered at African University Communication College.

She is sometimes fingered in controversial issues regarding her career and relationship life in the media.

3. Yaa Jackson – Presbyterian Girls’ High School

She started acting when she was a toddler. Aside her movie roles, she is a model and a budding musician.


She attended Presby Girls’ in Kumasi and completed in 2019. Immediately after graduating high school she disclosed in an interview that she won’t further her education.

4. Tracey Boakye – Angel Senior High School

Tracey is a celebrated actress, movie producer and a budding musician.

Her film production house, Shakira Movie Productions, has produced over 12 movies in Ghana. She recently gave birth to a baby girl.

She attended Angel Senior High School in Kumasi but dropped out in 2nd year after realizing school wasn’t her calling.

5. Maame Serwaa – Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ High School

She is a famous Kumawood actress known for her many acting roles in different movies.

She graduated from Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ in Kumasi and revealed in an interview on TV3 that she hopes to continue at University of Ghana, Legon to read acting as a course.


In November 2018, news was out that she has been signed as a brand ambassador for Knutsford University, a private tertiary institution in Ghana. The school also gave her a 4-year degree scholarship.

6. Ellen White – Adventist Senior High School

She is a very pretty actress and normally play romantic roles in Kumawood movies.

She has acted in over 50 movies and was involved in a controversy where it was alleged she snatched colleague actress, Emelia Brobbey’s husband from her.


She revealed on a popular TV program that she attended ADASS in Ashanti Region.

7. Late Bishop Nyarko – Tweneboa Kodua School and OKESS

He attended Tweneboa Kodua Senior High School in Kumawu for 5 years and later completed his 6th form education at Osei Kyeretwie School (OKESS) in Kumasi.

8. Salinko – Kumasi High School

He attended Kings International School for his basic education and Kumasi High School and Faith Assemblies of God Senior High School.

He stood as Parliamentary Candidate on PPP’s ticket in the 2016 general elections in Ghana.

9. Bill Asamoah – Asanteman Senior High School

He is an old boy of Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi and completed in 1994. He later furthered his education at Christian Service University College in Kumasi.

10. Bernard Aduse Poku – Kumasi High School

He is one of the actors that helped grow the Kumawood movie industry. He has acted and produced many movies over the years.

He took a break from acting and relocated to the United States. He is a proud old boy of Kumasi High School.
